Benny Coulter Coaching – Week 4 Update
We had another fantastic week of coaching with the amazing Benny Coulter, and we were absolutely delighted to get out into the sunshine in our brilliant school yard. The bright weather made the perfect backdrop for another energetic and exciting GAA session, guided—of course—by the best coach around.
This week, children continued to build on their skills in line with the Northern Ireland Curriculum for Physical Education.
Developing New Skills: Kicking and the Punt Pass
A highlight of Week 4 was the introduction of two important GAA skills:
- Kicking
- The Punt Pass
These techniques were demonstrated brilliantly by one of the finest Down footballers, giving the children a real-world example of how these skills are used at the highest level. The pupils were captivated, motivated, and eager to give each skill a try themselves.
Small-Sided Games – Putting Skills Into Action
To round off the session, the children were divided into three teams and took part in short, friendly games. These mini-matches gave pupils the chance to practise their new kicking and passing skills in a real game context, reinforcing everything learned during coaching.
Through today’s activities, pupils developed key areas outlined in the Northern Ireland Curriculum for PE, including:
- Fundamental movement skills
- Building confidence and competence in sports
- Working collaboratively and fairly in team situations
- Developing tactical awareness through game activities
By learning, practising, and then applying these GAA skills in games, children strengthened their coordination, control, teamwork, and decision?making—all core elements promoted in the PE curriculum.
