Week 3 Training With the Talented Benny Coulter

12th Mar 2026

Week 3 brought another fantastic coaching session as the pupils were guided by the incredibly talented Benny Coulter. His experience, energy and passion for GAA shone through every activity, creating a session that was both enjoyable and deeply beneficial for developing skills aligned with the PE Curriculum for Games and Fundamental Movement Skills.

Dynamic Warm Up Stretches

Benny began with a series of dynamic warm up stretches designed to prepare the pupils’ bodies for movement, increase flexibility and build coordination. These warm ups supported key elements of the curriculum, such as:

  • Developing controlled movement
  • Improving balance, agility and posture
  • Preparing physically and mentally for activity

The pupils responded brilliantly—focused, enthusiastic, and ready to learn.

Skill Building Games

Next came a fantastic set of small sided games and skill stations, each carefully chosen to improve:

  • Throwing and catching skills
  • Evasion and spatial awareness
  • Decision making under pressure

These activities linked directly to curriculum outcomes that promote competence in games, understanding of tactics, and the ability to apply skills in new situations. Under Benny’s guidance, pupils learned not just how to perform a skill, but when and why to use it in a game.

Teamwork and Scoring Together

The session finished with larger group games that emphasised teamwork, communication and collective strategy. Pupils worked together to create scoring opportunities, demonstrating the curriculum emphasis on:

  • Working cooperatively in team scenarios
  • Understanding roles and responsibilities
  • Respecting others and showing good sporting behaviour

It was inspiring to see how pupils encouraged one another, shared ideas and celebrated team success.

A Final Encouragement From Benny

Before wrapping up, Benny encouraged all pupils to tune in to the many GAA matches televised this weekend. Watching the sport played at a high level is a brilliant way to deepen understanding of movement, tactics and teamwork.

He gave a special mention to Down, who are currently the only team in the league with full points—a fantastic achievement and a great example for our young players to look up to.
