Road Safety Education - Task (Road Signs 8-11 year olds)

Dear Parent, this task is designed for you to work alongside and complete with your child/children in relation to a key road safety issue. The focus is “Road Signs”. It is important for children to recognise that road signs give messages to all road users and not only to car drivers. Therefore it is beneficial for children to be familiar with and understand what road signs mean. It will also help to remind you as an adult and road user what various signs mean.

Circular Signs nearly always give orders with those having a red circle telling us what NOT TO DO and those having a blue circle telling us what TO DO. Red triangular signs usually warn us of dangers ahead – an exception to this is the Give Way sign which is actually an order sign.  Rectangular and pentagon shaped signs give directions or other information such as road names. There are also two follow up activities (road signs/put the road signs in the correct box) which can be printed out and completed by your child.

Speed Limit Sign          Shared Path Sign       Bend to Right Sign        Give Way Sign          Direction Sign

When you are out with your child/children for daily exercise or a walk to the shop, you could play a game of “I Spy a Road Sign”. Who will be the road sign champion?  The rules of the game are;

v  A person wins 1 point if they can identify whether the sign is;

  • An Order Sign
  • A Warning Sign or
  • An Information Sign

v  A person wins another 1 point if they correctly tell you what the sign means

v  A person wins an extra bonus 1 point if the sign they spot is one with a vehicle, bicycle or animal on it

Have fun and if you are not sure what the road sign means, the Highway Code webpage below will help you out.  Above all, stay safe and don’t forget your road safety by keeping alert and being aware of what is happening around you!
