Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People

23rd Sep 2025

P7 Pupils Meet the Children’s Commissioner!

Today, our P7 pupils had a fantastic opportunity to visit Newcastle Library and meet Chris Quinn, the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People. Chris’ important role is to safeguard and promote the rights and best interests of all children and young people across Northern Ireland.

During the visit, the children learned about the Commissioner’s responsibilities and how he represents their voices. Ollie took centre stage by holding a giant mobile phone, highlighting the importance of communication between children and those who support them. Pupils from eight different schools joined in, each using creative props to show how the Commissioner stands up for children’s rights:

  • A megaphone for speaking up
  • Large ears for listening to children’s views
  • The “42 Rights of the Child” book
  • A flag for supporters and allies
  • A judge’s wig to represent the law
  • A team of “lawyers” who help the Commissioner in his work

There was also an amazing cape made by the previous commissioner, Koulla Yiasouma.

Chris definitely won the children over when he shared his belief that children in Primary school should not have to complete homework! This sparked lots of smiles and nods of agreement from our pupils.

The children enjoyed a group photo with Chris Quinn, and the Mourne Observer was there to capture the special moment. It was a memorable day of learning, teamwork, and celebrating the rights of every child!
