Exploring Shapes in Primary 4 and 5!
Our Primary 4 and 5 pupils have been diving into the fascinating world of 2D and 3D shapes as part of their Maths learning. This topic links directly to the Northern Ireland Curriculum, which encourages children to develop knowledge and understanding of shape and space through practical activities and problem-solving.
The children have been investigating:
- Properties of 2D shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles – looking at sides, angles, and vertices.
- 3D shapes like cubes, spheres, cylinders, and pyramids – exploring faces, edges, and corners.
- Parallel and perpendicular lines, learning how these appear in everyday objects and within shapes.
- Lines of symmetry, discovering how shapes can be folded or reflected to create mirror images.
Through hands-on activities, discussions, and creative tasks, pupils are building essential skills in reasoning and spatial awareness. These experiences help them meet the curriculum objectives for Mathematics and Numeracy, which focus on developing confidence in using mathematical language and applying concepts to real-life situations.
We’re excited to see how their understanding grows as they continue to explore patterns, symmetry, and the geometry all around them!
