Clay modelling in P4 and P5

Miss Milligan has been working with Primary 4 and Primary 5 pupils to develop their skills in using clay as a creative medium. Over the past sessions, the children have been learning how to handle and manipulate clay to construct a 3D piece. They began by exploring modelling techniques, focusing particularly on how to form a pinch pot, which served as the foundation for their pinch pot animal or imaginative creation.

Once the base structure was complete, pupils moved on to the design stage. They examined a variety of textures, discussing how artists use pattern and surface detail to bring sculptures to life. Using this understanding, the children incorporated texture into their own clay pieces through scoring and by attaching additional clay elements, such as ears, tails, facial features, or decorative patterns. This encouraged them to experiment, problem solve, and refine their ideas as they worked.

The project supported pupils in becoming more confident with 3D form, expressing their creativity, and developing practical skills such as shaping, joining, smoothing, and designing. Throughout the process, pupils engaged in purposeful discussion, shared ideas, and reflected on their artistic choices—all key elements of the Art and Design curriculum.
