Celebrating St. Patrick

18th Mar 2026

Today our class learned all about St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with so much pride, colour, and tradition.

Who Was St. Patrick?

St. Patrick lived over 1,500 years ago. He wasn’t actually born in Ireland—he came from Britain. When he was a young boy, he was taken to Ireland, but after escaping, he later chose to return as a missionary. He wanted to teach the people of Ireland about Christianity and spent many years travelling around the country helping and guiding people. That is why he is remembered as such an important figure in Irish history.

Why Do We Wear Shamrock?

Mrs. Connor brought in real shamrock, and we learned why it’s such a famous symbol of St. Patrick’s Day.
St. Patrick used the three leaves of the shamrock to explain the idea of the Holy Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—three persons in one God.
Because of this, the shamrock became a symbol of Patrick’s teaching, and people began wearing it on their clothing every St. Patrick’s Day.

Traditions of St. Patrick’s Day

We discovered many special traditions that people in Ireland enjoy on March 17th:

  • Wearing green and shamrock
  • Going to St. Patrick’s Day parades
  • Celebrating Irish music, dance, and culture
  • Meeting with family and friends
  • And, of course, attending Mass in honour of St. Patrick

Mass for St. Patrick’s Day

Mrs. Connor brought in the Mass leaflet from the St. Patrick’s Day Mass. Inside, we looked at the hymns “Hail, Glorious St. Patrick” and “Céad Míle Fáilte”, which we also know from our own school celebration of Mass. The children enjoyed seeing the familiar hymns and understanding how churches all around the country celebrate the same feast together.

To help us learn even more, we completed comprehension work. The children read a passage about the life of St. Patrick and answered questions to show their understanding. Everyone drew a shamrock and added other St. Patrick’s Day traditions—parades, Irish flags, green hats, rainbows, and anything that reminded them of the holiday.

It was a wonderful way to learn about Ireland’s patron saint and the meaning behind the traditions we enjoy every year.
